Begin with the documented object, not the impression

The Metropolitan Museum of Art records this brooch as made by Marcus & Co. in New York around 1900. Its listed materials are plique-à-jour enamel, conch pearl, diamond, platinum and eighteen-karat gold. It measures 7.6 centimetres long and carries accession number 2016.107. These are museum catalogue facts, not a commercial appraisal by this publication.

Sweet-pea blossoms and leaves curl around a conch pearl while slender enamel cells shift between blue and green. The Met connects the naturalistic, three-dimensional modelling and colour to Art Nouveau. Our narrower editorial judgment is that the design depends less on one rare material than on how light, void and line are organised around an irregular centre.

What plique-à-jour actually means

The V&A explains that the technique involves firing glass into cells and removing the backing so light can pass through the enamel. The French name translates approximately as ‘letting in daylight’. The Met likewise describes the effect as stained glass because the coloured cells have no backing plate.

That construction differs from cloisonné, where wires divide colours that usually sit over a metal base, and from champlevé, where recesses are cut into a metal surface to receive enamel. Transparency alone does not identify the technique; the structure must be visible or documented reliably.

Why the technique was difficult

The V&A calls plique-à-jour the most technically demanding enamelling method. Through each firing, glass must settle within fine metal boundaries without the open structure collapsing or the cell cracking. The result must then survive as a wearable jewel rather than a stationary panel.

The Met identifies Marcus & Co. as one of the few American firms of its day to succeed with the technique. It records that Herman Marcus established the company in 1892 after earlier work in the trade, and that his sons George Elder and William continued it. Those facts belong to the firm and this object; they do not imply that every Marcus jewel uses this enamel or belongs to the same period.

Art Nouveau: material serves the idea

The V&A places the high point of Art Nouveau jewellery around 1900 and notes the movement’s elevation of glass, horn and enamel rather than confining visual importance to conventional precious stones. Nature became more than a printed ornament: it became curve, insect, flower and structure that changed with the wearer and the light.

There is no need to invent a secret symbolism for the sweet peas in this brooch. We can stay with what is visible and catalogued: naturalistic modelling, translucent enamel, a pearl centre and colour that responds to illumination. Any further emotional or symbolic meaning remains personal unless supported by a designer’s or workshop record.

How to look at an old enamel jewel

Start with an overall view in diffused light, then look from front and back without flexing the jewel. Note interrupted cells, cracks, sharp edges or cloudy areas that might reflect dirt, repair or an original variation. The museum image is a visual record of this object only—not a template for authenticating a similar-looking piece.

Enamel brilliance does not prove age, and style does not prove maker. Serious attribution needs qualified physical examination, mark reading, comparison of dimensions, materials and construction, plus invoices, ownership records or archives where available. Lustre Atlas does not authenticate or value jewellery from photographs.

Care: treat enamel as thin glass within a metal body

The Canadian Conservation Institute notes that glass is hard but brittle and vulnerable to impact, while enamelled decoration can be scratched or damaged when poorly adhered. GIA advises keeping jewellery away from household cleaners, chlorine, perfume and cosmetics because chemicals can harm precious metals and delicate gem materials.

A conservative inference for old composite jewels follows: store the brooch alone in a padded compartment, never hang it from its pin, and do not press on enamel wings or use steam or ultrasonic cleaning. Dust only with an exceptionally soft brush when every cell is stable, and leave cleaning or repair to a specialist who can assess each material.
